Danica Ready to Start Racing

Goodyear officials will not use the controversial Atlanta tire at Texas Motor Speedway for the Samsung 500 on April 6.

TMS president Eddie Gossage said Stu Grant, Goodyear’s director of racing, told him the tire manufacturer will bring the same tire the NASCAR teams used on the 1.5-mile oval in 2007.

Tires became a major issue at Atlanta Motor Speedway last weekend when Tony Stewart and other drivers criticized the hard tires used for the Kobalt Tools 500.

Atlanta is a 1.5-mile, high-banked oval, similar to Texas Motor Speedway, so Gossage was pleased that Goodyear will use last year’s tire compound at TMS next month.

“That tire produced two of the best races of the 2007 season,” Gossage said. “We had a last-lap pass by Jeff Burton to win the spring race and a side-by-side battle for the win by Jimmie Johnson and Matt Kenseth in the fall race.”

But those races were run in the previous car design. The April race at TMS will be the first in the new car.

Drivers Clint Bowyer and Juan Pablo Montoya participated in a Goodyear test at TMS in January using the 2007 tire on the new car.

“Clint said the car was drivable all over the racetrack,” Gossage said. “Goodyear officials tell me they’ve made adjustments for the new car. I trust their judgment.”

But Gossage would still like to give all the Cup teams an extra day of practice on the Thursday before the Samsung 500. NASCAR officials say they have no plans to do so.

“I still hope they change their mind,” Gossage said. “It appears obvious to me after Atlanta and Las Vegas that the teams still are trying to get their arms around the new car on these 1.5-mile tracks.

“We should err on the side of caution, but we didn’t get an open test. We pay NASCAR the biggest sanctioning fee in the sport and they never give us a test,” Gossage said.

Kyle Busch gave Toyota its first NASCAR Sprint Cup victory, driving away from the pack in the waning laps to win the Kobalt Tools 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday.

Busch, winning for the first time since last March 25 at Bristol, took the lead for good with 50 laps to go when Carl Edwards, trying for a third straight victory, went out with a broken transmission.

The first win for the Japanese automaker in NASCAR’s top series came in its 40th race and is the first NASCAR victory by a foreign manufacturer since Al Keller drove a Jaguar to a road course win in Linden, New Jersey in June 1954.

After Busch crossed the finish line ahead of teammate Tony Stewart, he screamed on the radio, “Congratulations, (crew chief Steve) Addington, it’s your first one.”

It was the fifth Cup victory for Busch, who became the youngest winner on Atlanta’s 1.5-mile (2.4-kilometer) oval since Jeff Gordon won in 1995 at 23 years, 6 months. Busch will be 23 on May 2.

Stewart, who continued to complain bitterly about the tires furnished this year by Goodyear, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. both passed Greg Biffle in the final laps to take second and third, with pole winner Gordon fifth.

Chaz Davies of Wales was named the winner of Saturday’s Daytona 200 AMA Formula Xtreme Series race at Daytona International Speedway after Josh Hayes was disqualified on a technical violation.

Davies, whose Attack Kawasaki entry finished second to Hayes in the season-opening race, was awarded the victory after a postrace inspection of the top three finishers found that the crankshaft on Hayes’ Honda had been illegally altered.

Kawasaki’s Steve Rapp, the 2007 Daytona winner, was moved from third to second in the official results, with Larry Pegram’s Ducati in third.

In the opening round of the AMA Superbike championship, six-time Superbike champion Mat Mladin led all 15 laps on his way to a 3.368-second victory over his Suzuki teammate Ben Spies.

Carl Edwards used two straight wins to take the Sprint Cup points lead for the first time in his career.

On Wednesday, NASCAR said his Las Vegas victory was tainted and slammed Edwards and his Roush Fenway Racing team with its toughest penalty yet. Edwards was docked 100 points—knocking him out of first place—and stripped of the 10 bonus points he earned for the win.

Edwards would have carried those bonus points into the Chase for the championship, assuming he’s one of the 12 drivers to qualify for NASCAR’s 10-race sprint to the title..”<!–more–>
